Forward Guyana Proposes US$1,500 Minimum Salary for Nurses

  • News

Forward Guyana has announced a bold initiative to ensure that all registered nurses in the public service earn a minimum salary of US$1,500 per month. This commitment aims to address long-standing issues of underpayment and undervaluation faced by nurses, who are essential to the nation’s healthcare system.

Nurses in Guyana often work long hours and provide critical care, yet many have observed foreign recruits earning higher salaries for the same roles. Forward Guyana pledges to end this disparity by guaranteeing equal pay for equal work, ensuring that no foreign nurse will earn more than a Guyanese nurse in the same position.

The party highlights that the current PPP/C government already pays foreign nurses US$1,500 a month, suggesting that similar compensation for local nurses is both feasible and necessary.

Additional Support for Nurses

To further support nurses, Forward Guyana plans to offer:

Free land allocations and low-interest home loans at 4% interest with only 3% down to provide financial stability.

A 15% reduction on vehicle import taxes for vehicles priced under US$50,000, facilitating access to reliable transportation.

Investment in Career Development

Forward Guyana also aims to invest in the professional growth of nurses by promoting:

Career development programs

Continuing education opportunities

Overseas training partnerships to enhance skills and career prospects locally.

Restoring Dignity and Fairness

The party emphasizes its commitment to restoring dignity, respect, and fairness to the nursing profession. “Our nurses give everything for us. It is time we give them what they deserve: a living wage, a secure future, and a government that values them as much as they value us,” a Forward Guyana representative stated.

This initiative reflects a broader commitment to improving the healthcare system and ensuring that those who serve it are adequately compensated and supported.
