Hugh Park, formerly a telecommunications technician, has once again made headlines, this time as the top student in the Master of Laws (LL.M) in International Business and International Law program at the University of Guyana for the Class of 2025. His outstanding achievement was officially recognized during the Faculty of Social Sciences’ Awards and Prize Giving Ceremony held on February 11, 2026.

In 2021, Park made a remarkable transition from his technical background to the legal field, exchanging his tools for textbooks. For many, earning a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) would be the pinnacle of accomplishment; however, Park views his Master’s degree as an essential step toward a larger vision that includes pursuing a PhD.
Park’s motivation for returning to academic life centers around his desire for personal development and the aspiration to become a well-rounded professional. His academic performance highlights a profound interest in the intersection of international legal frameworks and business, an area increasingly relevant as Guyana undergoes rapid economic growth.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Park is making strides in his professional career at the Attorney General’s Chambers and the Ministry of Legal Affairs. After serving as Parliamentary Counsel and State Counsel, he currently holds the position of Law Revision Officer, where he plays a critical role in legislative work, providing litigation support and aiding in the revision of Guyana’s laws.
Despite his accolades and sophisticated shift from technical work to high-level legal research, Park remains humble. He attributes his success to a strong support system of mentors and peers who believed in his potential throughout his challenging journey.
“From technician to top student,” Park’s inspiring story is a testament to the power of perseverance and lifelong learning. It serves as a compelling reminder that with dedication, the transition from technical fields to leadership roles in academia and public service is not just possible but a viable pathway to contributing to the nation.
