Georgetown, Guyana — The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) celebrated the achievements of its novice boxing team today, recognizing their exemplary performance at the 2025 Andrew “Sixhead” Lewis National Novices Boxing Championship. The small but formidable team successfully retained the Best Gym title, showcasing their dedication and commitment to excellence.

The honor ceremony was attended by key figures in the GDF, including Colonel General Staff Captain (Coast Guard) Vernon Burnett, Adjutant General Colonel Lloyd Souvenir, and GDF Director of Sports Mr. Roderick Lovell, among others.

In his remarks, Captain Burnett congratulated the team on their accomplishments and expressed pride in their adherence to a 36-year tradition of determination and discipline. “We look forward to cheering you on as you climb the ladder of sporting excellence in boxing,” he stated, wishing them success in the upcoming National Intermediate Championship.

The two-day championship, held on July 25 and 26 at the National Gymnasium, saw the GDF team excel, clinching both the Best Boxer and Best Coach titles. A contingent of nine boxers represented the GDF, with seven securing medals. The two who did not medal were unable to compete due to a lack of opponents in their categories.

In an all-GDF clash in the Welterweight Division finals, Lance Corporal (LCPL) Terrence Berton emerged victorious over LCPL Brandon Jerrick, earning gold and silver respectively. Other medalists included Privates Tray McPherson (silver in Junior Middleweight), Nickel Witter (silver in Junior Welterweight), and Andrew Garnett (silver in Cruiserweight). Reservists Eon Bancroft (gold in Junior Welterweight) and Danielle Trotman (gold in Junior Middleweight) also excelled, with several matches featuring GDF versus GDF competitions.

Bancroft’s outstanding performance earned him the title of Best Boxer, while Coach Steele Crawford was recognized as Best Coach. The Chief of Defence Staff, along with other officers and ranks, extended their congratulations to the team for their excellent performance and dedication.
