GECOM Denounces False Claims Regarding Polling Station Change

News

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has issued a statement denouncing a false Facebook post by Credible Sources that alleged staff assigned to a polling station at Hibiscus Drive, Peters Hall, East Bank Demerara, were chased out by the property owner. GECOM has clarified that these claims are inaccurate and misleading.

In the official statement, GECOM emphasized that the post does not reflect the true circumstances surrounding the relocation of the polling station. Earlier today, the owner of the private residence contacted GECOM to express their decision not to allow the property to be used as a polling station. In response, GECOM’s logistics team quickly arranged an alternative venue.

As a result, voters who were originally assigned to the Hibiscus Drive location will now cast their ballots at the Caricom General Insurance Company, situated nearby. GECOM urges all electors affected by this change to take note of the new polling venue.

The Commission reiterated the importance of responsible reporting and urged all stakeholders to verify information before dissemination, especially in the lead-up to the General and Regional Elections. GECOM stressed that misinformation can create unnecessary panic and confusion in an already tense political climate, and called for all parties to act with integrity during this critical time.
