Kaieteur News Reports | Employees of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) were victims of an armed robbery on Thursday morning at their office located on Mandela Avenue. The incident took place around 11:56 AM on December 18, 2025.

The victims have been identified as Lovern Rawlings, a 50-year-old janitor from Lot 8 Charles Street, Charlestown, and Maxine Barrow, a 57-year-old scrutineer residing at Lot 117 Cowan Street, Kingston. According to police investigations, a male suspect, posing as a National Identification card applicant, entered the upper flat of the two-story building through the northern main access door.

At the time of the robbery, Rawlings, Barrow, and other staff members were present in the office. The suspect requested registration for a National Identification card but was informed that this would not resume until next year. He then brandished a black handgun, demanding the valuables of those present.

In fear for their lives, Rawlings handed over a Samsung A7 cellphone valued at $30,000, along with a 10-pennyweight gold chain worth approximately $200,000. Barrow also lost a gold chain, with its value still to be determined.

After the robbery, the gunman fled the scene in an unknown direction. Police arrived at the location around 1:15 PM to process the scene. Investigators have begun canvassing the area for any private CCTV footage and are also reviewing camera feeds linked to the command center to help identify and locate the suspect.

Statements have been collected from the victims, and the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to contact the nearest police station.
