GECOM Initiates Preparations for Upcoming Local Government Elections

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has begun preparations for the Local Government Elections, scheduled for June 2026. The Commission is currently publishing advertisements for temporary staff to assist with the electoral process.

In a statement to News Source, GECOM’s Public Relations Officer, Yolanda Warde, confirmed that the law mandates local government elections to be held every three years and emphasized that GECOM is proactively readying itself ahead of the elections. “GECOM, being cognizant of the fact that the elections are due in June this year, has taken preemptive moves to ensure that anytime those elections are called, we are ready,” Warde stated.

As part of these preparations, GECOM has issued a notice seeking qualified individuals to serve as temporary trainers and is also looking for vendors to produce voter education materials.

The last local government elections were held in June 2023. If the upcoming elections proceed as scheduled, they will take place less than a year after the General and Regional Elections.

The upcoming elections arrive amidst ongoing concerns raised by opposition parties regarding the List of Electors, with increasing calls for reforms within GECOM to ensure the integrity and transparency of the electoral process.
