GECOM Receives Nearly 4,000 Proxy Vote Applications; Parties Criticize Deadline

  • News

News Source Guyana Reports : The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has received 3,972 applications for proxy voting ahead of the September 1 elections. Deputy Chief Elections Officer Aneal Giddings confirmed that these applications are being processed by Returning Officers.

Eligible voters include those unable to attend polling stations due to various reasons, such as physical incapacitation or official duties. However, the deadline for submission was August 11, 2025, prompting complaints from political parties about the limited timeframe for applications.

Giddings noted that the applications are under investigation to ensure their validity, with findings expected by the end of the week. Chief Election Officer Vishnu Persaud defended the timeline, stating it complied with statutory guidelines.

In total, 757,690 voters will participate across 2,790 polling stations. The ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic has requested the relocation of some polling stations to improve accessibility, which is under review. Members of the Disciplined Services will vote early, on Friday.
