GECOM Responds to Misleading Statements from WIN Party

  • News

The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has issued a statement addressing what it describes as misleading claims made by the WIN Party regarding the approval of polling agents for the upcoming elections.

In a press release, GECOM emphasized that the assertions made by the WIN Party misrepresent the facts surrounding the appointment of polling agents.

GECOM clarified that, although it is not directly responsible for agent appointments, the Chief Election Officer sent an email on August 11, 2025, to all contesting political parties. The email reminded them that “Party Agents shall give notice in writing of every appointment of an assistant agent, counting agent, polling agent, and alternate polling agents, stating the name and address of the person appointed,” and must do so no later than seven days before Election Day.

The Commission noted that the WIN Party did not meet this requirement within the stipulated timeframe. Consequently, the claim that GECOM has failed in its duty is deemed inaccurate and misleading.

During a Commission meeting held on August 28, 2025, GECOM expressed willingness to consider flexibility regarding late submissions to ensure all parties, including the WIN Party, have polling agents in place. However, discussions could not proceed due to a loss of quorum.

The matter is expected to be revisited in a Commission meeting scheduled for August 30, 2025, which was arranged by Justice of Appeal (Ret’d) Claudette Singh prior to the issuance of the WIN Party’s press release.

GECOM urged all political parties to comply with electoral laws and act responsibly in their public communications. The spread of misleading claims, the Commission warned, could undermine public confidence in the electoral process, which is critical at this time.

GECOM reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the General and Regional Elections on September 1, 2025, are conducted in a free, fair, transparent, and credible manner, aiming to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
