GGDMA Urges Miners to Increase Gold Declarations for 2025 Targets

News

The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) has made a renewed call for miners across the nation to increase their gold declarations to meet the ambitious national production targets set for 2025.

In a statement released on Saturday, the association highlighted that the sustainability of the mining sector is contingent upon transparency, compliance, and a decisive rejection of illicit trading practices.

The GGDMA reminded miners that all gold should be sold exclusively to the Guyana Gold Board (GGB) or to authorized buyers. These authorized entities include dealers licensed by the GGB and traders approved by the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC).

Miners were specifically warned against engaging with unregulated “roving traders” or illegal landings, where unauthorized gold buyers operate without proper documentation. The GGDMA emphasized that such activities are often linked to smuggling networks that deprive the state of taxes and royalties and contribute to broader criminal enterprises.

Miners are also encouraged to meticulously maintain records of all transactions, including receipts, to safeguard their interests and ensure their contributions to the national economy are accurately recorded.

The association provided several key guidelines for miners conducting business:

  • Ensure proper documentation is issued for every sale to a licensed buyer.
  • Request periodic transaction statements from licensed gold dealers.
  • Cross-check those statements with the GGB to verify their accuracy.
  • Secure verification that tax deductions and payments are handled correctly.

Additionally, the GGDMA advised miners to verify the legitimacy of gold buyers prior to sales. Lists of approved dealers and traders are available on the GGB and GGMC websites.

In a further clarification, the GGDMA reminded miners that it is illegal to pay workers with gold, commonly referred to as the “Blai box.” All gold sales must be made through authorized buyers or the Gold Board.

The association urged legitimate small and medium-scale miners to distance themselves from rogue elements and criminals who masquerade illegal mining and smuggling as small-scale operations.

Notably, the GGDMA pointed out that under the current administration, several incentives beneficial to the mining industry have been reinstated. Miners are encouraged to fully comply with declarations to support these efforts.

The GGDMA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Government in its initiatives to boost gold production and declarations while combating smuggling and illegal mining activities.
