Government Achieves Full Connectivity of All Indigenous Villages Under LEO WiFiGY

News

The Office of the Prime Minister, through the National Data Management Authority (NDMA), has successfully rolled out the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) WiFiGY service to all 253 indigenous villages across Guyana, marking a significant milestone in achieving public high-speed internet access for the first time in national history. This initiative benefits over 135,000 residents from these communities.

Expanding Access and Opportunities

This achievement aligns with the government’s digital inclusion mandate, aimed at expanding equitable access to essential services, improving learning opportunities, and strengthening connectivity nationwide. The installations began on July 10, 2024, in the Moruca sub-district, officially launched by Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips in Kamwatta Village.

Since then, technical teams have been deployed across Regions 1–10, completing hundreds of installations at the 253 sites. To ensure consistent service in remote and far-flung areas, the deployment teams employed a tailored model based on the geographic conditions of each location, utilizing pole-mounted infrastructure with solar-powered systems and battery reserves. This development has provided 24/7 high-speed internet access to previously underserved villages, such as Annisbisi (Red Hill).

Benefits to Communities

Thanks to the LEO WiFiGY initiative, schools, ICT hubs, health centers, community grounds, learning facilities, and administrative buildings in these villages are now connected. Residents gain unhindered access to learning opportunities, including the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL). They also benefit from digital skills training, remote medical consultations through telemedicine, expanded micro-entrepreneurship opportunities, and enhanced government services.

Commitment to Digital Equity

Prime Minister Phillips welcomed the completion of the initiative and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring digital equity. “This achievement reflects strong collaboration across government agencies, regional leadership, Village Councils, and our technical partners,” he stated.

He emphasized that with the programme’s completion, every Indigenous community is connected, providing every Guyanese child, family, and entrepreneur a pathway to digital opportunities that were once out of reach. “This is how we build equity, strengthen national participation, and continue moving Guyana forward,” he concluded.
