Government to Enhance Support for Home Building in Next Term

Vice President and General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, announced that if re-elected, the government will increase support for Guyanese seeking to build homes, making home ownership more accessible.

During a press briefing at Freedom House, Dr. Jagdeo outlined plans to provide both financial and material assistance to citizens, building on the existing Cement and Steel Subsidy Programme. This initiative offers subsidies for steel and cement based on the estimated cost of homes, providing one sling of cement for homes valued at $6 million and below, and two slings for those costing between $6 million and $25 million.

“We want to support them financially to build more homes so more Guyanese can own homes. This is a commitment from a party that takes its promises seriously,” he emphasized, contrasting the PPP’s approach with that of opposition leader Aubrey Norton, who recently claimed he could build 200,000 homes.

The Vice President also highlighted broader initiatives, including the creation and enhancement of communities and the acceleration of the Young Professionals Housing Programme to empower youth with home ownership opportunities.

Additionally, plans are in place to establish police outposts and extend the Safe Country initiative to improve safety in these communities. Dr. Jagdeo noted that recreational facilities, including playgrounds and green spaces, will also be developed. The government has already procured 100,000 lights to be installed in various communities to enhance safety.

Dr. Jagdeo stated that garbage collection, parking spaces, and pollution management will be prioritized, with a focus on increasing disposable income through tax incentives for home builders.

The PPP/C Administration has made significant strides in the housing sector, distributing 50,000 housing lots from 2020 to 2025 and creating 93 new housing areas in high-demand regions such as Mabaruma, Wales, and Lusignan.

Since August 2020, the government has invested over $240 billion in housing infrastructure development, reinforcing its commitment to meeting the housing needs of the Guyanese people.
