GPHC & Gift of Life International Deliver Life-Saving Cardiac Care to 18 Guyanese Children

News

From August 4–8, 2025, the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, in partnership with Gift of Life International, conducted its second pediatric cardiac mission of the year, offering hope to children with life-threatening heart conditions.

A 25-member international team, led by Dr. Rodrigo Soto, performed 10 cardiac catheterizations and 6 open-heart surgeries, benefiting 16 young patients. They also screened 80 children for heart conditions, identifying those needing urgent treatment.

So far, 13 of the 16 children have been discharged, with the remaining 3 expected to go home soon.

Importance for Guyana
Prior to 2023, families had to seek expensive overseas treatment for specialized cardiac care. Now, thanks to strengthened partnerships and increased local capacity, GPHC hosts three missions annually, improving access to care.

The goal is to build local expertise to provide these procedures year-round in Guyana.

Teamwork That Saves Lives
Each mission involves careful planning and collaboration across hospital departments. Dr. Sara Singh emphasized the partnership’s impact, stating, “Our goal is that every child in Guyana with a heart condition can get the care they need at home.”

The GOLI team will return for their final 2025 mission from December 6–16. Every heartbeat matters.
