The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) is making significant strides in expanding electricity access in accordance with the Government of Guyana’s commitment to nationwide electrification. Recent distribution works have successfully connected over 150 residents in several communities in Mahaicony, Berbice, and along the Linden/Soesdyke Highway to the power grid for the first time.

In New Providence, Mahaicony, GPL has installed approximately 700 meters of new distribution network, providing first-time electricity access to 20 new customers. Meanwhile, in West Coast Berbice, network expansion was carried out in Number 7, 8, and 9 Villages (Backlands), adding about 4.8 kilometers of new distribution network to accommodate over 50 customers.

The company also completed electrification projects at High Dam and Angoys Avenue in New Amsterdam, constructing approximately 1.4 kilometers of new distribution network that brings power to more than 60 residents for the first time.

Additional efforts were made at Madeweni, along the Linden/Soesdyke Highway, where a newly constructed 1.7-kilometer electricity network has been energized, connecting approximately 20 households and ensuring reliable electricity access just in time for the holiday season.

Residents in these newly electrified areas have already begun applying for their connections, eager to benefit from consistent electricity supply. These initiatives are part of the Government of Guyana’s broader mission to enhance electricity access nationwide, thereby empowering communities and improving the quality of life for residents.
