The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) company is urging both residential and commercial customers to notify the company of any increases in their electricity usage. This request comes in response to several complaints regarding voltage fluctuations, damaged meters, and burnt appliances, issues that GPL attributes to unreported increases in energy consumption.

In a statement released on Sunday, GPL emphasized the importance of providing “reasonable” notice regarding any changes in service requirements, including any anticipated spikes in energy consumption. The power company noted that many customers have been increasing their electricity usage due to the installation of air conditioning units, heavy-duty appliances, and the conversion of residential homes into multiple dwelling units and apartments.
Under the Standard Terms and Conditions for Electric Services, customers are required to disclose any alterations in their electricity usage and the addition of large appliances to their service. This communication is crucial to ensure the stability and reliability of the electrical system serving these customers.
Additionally, GPL recently announced the deployment of over 30 emergency response teams to be prepared for any emergency situations that may arise during the current season. This proactive measure aims to enhance customer service and respond effectively to electrical issues as they occur.
The company encourages all customers to adhere to these guidelines to help mitigate potential problems related to electricity supply.
