The Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) has issued a response to serious allegations made by WIN regarding the workplace environment at the Rice Research Station in Burma, Mahaicony, as reported on January 30, 2026.

In its statement, GRDB emphasized its zero-tolerance policy toward sexual harassment and the abuse of power. The organization insists that, as of the date of the statement, no complaints of sexual harassment or misconduct have been formally received by the Human Resource Department, management, or the general manager.
GRDB outlined its well-established hierarchical structure and standard operating procedures, which promote respect and a healthy work environment. It noted that concerns raised are treated with high priority and that employees are encouraged to express any issues through regular meetings with the Human Resources Department. In a recent engagement on January 29, 2026, with staff from the seed production department at the Burma Rice Research Facility, no allegations of misconduct, including sexual harassment, theft of ducks, or inadequate toilet facilities for security guards, were reported.
Addressing the specific allegation regarding stolen ducks, GRDB explained that it operates an integrated Rice-Duck pilot project. Unfortunately, the loss of 14 ducks was attributed to an attack by stray dogs. The organization confirmed that proceeds from the sale of mature drakes have been properly accounted for.
GRDB also criticized WIN for referencing the old guard hut, which has not been used for several years. Security personnel are now situated under a shed, providing better access to farm machinery and enhanced safety, along with 24-hour access to two toilet facilities.
Additionally, GRDB highlighted its partnership with the Mahaicony Technical Institute to offer practical training in welding, fabrication, and carpentry. This initiative has proven successful, with the board aiming to further enhance internship standards for participants.
The GRDB affirmed its commitment to providing a safe and decent work environment for all employees. The organization ensures that workers have a mechanism to share grievances, which are addressed effectively. GRDB remains dedicated to improving its standards to fulfill its mandate of enhancing farmers’ livelihoods and contributing to food security in Guyana.
