for Consultancy Services

The Government of Guyana has granted its no objection to a contract worth US$650,000 per month between the Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL) and the Dominican Republic’s InterEnergy Group. The contract, which involves consultancy services, was presented as a single-source procurement to the cabinet on July 17, 2025.

This agreement comes amid ongoing delays in the government’s much-anticipated gas-to-energy project, which has left the national grid reliant on two rented powerships to meet electricity demand.

The partnership between GPL and InterEnergy has been a topic of concern among workers, who raised fears about a potential takeover of GPL operations. In response, GPL clarified its relationship with InterEnergy, noting that the two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in January 2024. This MoU was intended to explore collaborative opportunities, allowing GPL to leverage InterEnergy’s extensive technical expertise through consultation and knowledge sharing.

GPL emphasized that the collaboration focuses on providing technical assistance for ongoing and future infrastructure development projects. As GPL undertakes significant upgrades to modernize and expand the national electricity grid, it highlighted the necessity for specialized expertise, which InterEnergy is well-equipped to provide.

Importantly, GPL stated that the partnership is not meant to displace or replace its employees. Instead, it aims to enhance the capabilities of the existing workforce. Employees will receive training, exposure, and hands-on experience alongside international experts, ultimately strengthening local capacity and ensuring the long-term sustainability of Guyana’s energy sector.

As the country navigates its energy challenges, this collaboration with InterEnergy Group is seen as a strategic move to bolster GPL’s operational efficiency and infrastructure development.
