The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) reported that firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) responded to a major traffic accident on the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge on the morning of Thursday, January 29, 2026. Preliminary reports indicate that six vehicles were involved in the incident.

The GFS deployed one fire tender and two EMS ambulances, supported by a team of four firefighters and eight EMTs. Upon their arrival at the scene, firefighters utilized hydraulic extrication equipment, including the Jaws of Life and a spreader, to cut open a vehicle and safely extricate one critically injured person who was trapped.
EMTs provided immediate emergency medical care on-site and transported the injured individual to a medical facility for further treatment.
The Guyana Fire Service remains on location, continuing to support ongoing response efforts. Members of the public are urged to exercise caution, reduce speed, and avoid the area when possible to allow emergency teams to work safely and efficiently.
