Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Hugh Todd stated that the ministry is in active contact with Guyana’s embassies in Doha and Kuwait to provide support for Guyanese nationals residing in those countries. However, he noted that no citizens have reached out for assistance so far.

The Guyanese diaspora in the Middle East is relatively small, with many individuals holding dual citizenship and possibly seeking support from their second country.

Recent escalations began on February 28, when the United States and Israeli Defence Forces launched coordinated strikes against Iran, resulting in the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran. In response, Iran and allied groups carried out retaliatory missile and drone attacks across the region, affecting territories such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

Significant damage has been reported, including attacks on crucial infrastructure like Dubai International Airport, Hamad International Airport in Doha, and Kuwait International Airport, leading to injuries and disruption.

In light of these developments, major Gulf carriers, including Emirates, Etihad Airways, and Flydubai, have suspended most flights to and from key hubs, with many flights canceled due to safety concerns and airspace closures.

On Saturday evening, the Guyana Government issued a statement condemning the Iranian attacks on Bahrain, the UAE, Qatar, and Kuwait, labeling them as unprovoked and unjustified violations of international law. The government expressed full solidarity with the affected countries and urged all parties to de-escalate tensions, highlighting the necessity of sustained peace and stability in the Middle East.

The statement reinforced Guyana’s commitment to advocating for dialogue and cooperation to prevent further escalation of the conflict.
