Guyana Police Force Partners with Amethyst School for Taser Certification Course

  • News

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has launched a three-day “Taser Certification Course” in collaboration with the Guyana Prison Service, the Amethyst School of Martial Arts, and the Security Training Academy. The course, which covers Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW), TX200P, and Body-Worn Camera (BWC) systems, commenced at the Officers’ Training Centre.

The opening ceremony was chaired by Deputy Superintendent London, who introduced Assistant Director of Prisons, Mr. Pilgrim, to provide an overview of the training. Mr. Pilgrim emphasized that this is a certification course for CEW Operators, rather than routine training.

“This certification ensures that officers operate within established legal frameworks,” he stated, highlighting the important role the training plays in preparing for the upcoming General and Regional Elections.

He reminded officers that tasers should only be deployed on non-compliant individuals, reinforcing the necessity of adhering to proper use-of-force protocols.

Deputy Commissioner and Commander 4A, Mr. McBean, expressed his approval of the initiative, noting that this is the first time a non-lethal approach of this kind is being implemented within the GPF. He encouraged all participating ranks to absorb the training thoroughly, assuring them that successful completion would result in official certification.

Colonel Souvenir, Chairman of the Joint Services Training Committee, echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of adapting to change in law enforcement and the need for modern, less-lethal policing methods.

This training reflects the GPF’s commitment to professional development, operational readiness, and responsible use of force in maintaining public safety.
