The Guyana Press Association (GPA) held its General Members Meeting on Sunday, July 6, 2025, at the Theatre Guild in Kingston, where a new executive council was elected.

Journalist Iva Wharton was chosen as President, with Ariana Gordon serving as Vice President. The council also includes Svetlana Abrams as Honorary Treasurer and Samantha Alleyne as Assistant Treasurer. Additionally, four Floor Members were elected: Gordon Moseley, veteran journalist Miranda La Rose, Royston Drakes, and Shervin Belgrave.
In her acceptance speech, Ms. Wharton emphasized the importance of collective involvement among media professionals. “I want to make it clear; we are the GPA, not just this executive. All of us must be involved,” she stated. “Thank you for entrusting me with the leadership of this organization, which was founded 80 years ago. It is a great responsibility, and I promise that with your support, we will continue our tradition of providing credible public information and awareness to the people of Guyana.”
She also highlighted that the new executive will prioritize amendments to the GPA’s constitution, aiming to broaden membership and address other key issues.
The meeting was attended by over 60 members, with 61 full members casting their votes. The election process was overseen by Attorney-at-Law Dela Britton, who served as the Returning Officer.
Before the elections, Treasurer Svetlana Abrams and outgoing President Nazima Raghubir presented reports to the members. Abrams provided a financial overview covering the past two years and announced that the Association’s 2023 audited financial statement has been filed with the Deeds and Commercial Registry and is now a public document.
The event was observed by representatives from the British High Commission, Canadian High Commission, and the United States Embassy, reflecting the importance of the GPA in promoting press freedom and professional integrity in journalism.
As the new executive council takes office, the GPA looks forward to strengthening its role in the media landscape of Guyana.
