Guyanese Nationals Added to UK’s “Deport Now, Appeal Later” Scheme

News

News Source Guyana Reports : Guyanese nationals are now included in the United Kingdom’s “deport now, appeal later” scheme, which targets foreign nationals who commit crimes in the UK. This policy allows the British government to deport individuals before they can appeal their removal, as reported by the BBC.

Guyana is the only CARICOM country among a total of 23 nations on the list, which also includes Canada, India, Australia, Angola, Botswana, Indonesia, Uganda, Zambia, and Latvia.

British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper noted that the scheme’s expansion aims to prevent foreign criminals from exploiting the UK’s immigration system and to expedite their removal. Under this policy, individuals whose claims are rejected will be expelled from the UK and can participate in their appeal hearings via video link from their home countries.

Previously, offenders could remain in the UK for extended periods while their cases were processed. The British Government argues that increasing deportations will help alleviate overcrowding in prisons.
