Health Minister Reports 30,000 Individuals Receiving Treatment for Diabetes in Guyana

As Guyana intensifies efforts to combat diabetes, Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony announced on Wednesday that approximately 30,000 individuals are currently receiving treatment for the disease. This figure is considerably lower than the 60,000 reported in 2021, following the ministry’s implementation of a new self-monitoring strategy aimed at curbing diabetes.

The strategy encourages individuals to regularly monitor their own blood glucose levels and emphasizes the importance of early intervention and prevention. Diabetes, a chronic condition, arises when the pancreas either fails to produce sufficient insulin or the body cannot effectively utilize the insulin it produces. Insulin is crucial for regulating blood glucose levels.

Minister Anthony revealed these statistics during the launch of a new recipe book designed to promote healthier meal preparation among Guyanese. He stressed the significance of adopting healthier lifestyles, which have proven effective in diabetes management.

“We have about 30,000 persons in Guyana attending institutions for diabetes treatment. While it’s essential to treat them, without proper control, they may develop complications,” he stated, noting that diabetes-related complications can include kidney disease, vision problems, and leg ulcers.

The high rates of chronic non-communicable diseases in Guyana are believed to be linked to dietary choices. “In our diabetic clinics, one of the main challenges is discussing nutrition with patients. Without dietary changes, managing their blood sugar levels becomes increasingly difficult. Diet is extremely important,” the minister emphasized.

Dr. Anthony’s remarks underline the ongoing efforts to improve public health in Guyana through education and lifestyle changes that promote better health outcomes for individuals living with diabetes.
