In a Detailed Social Media Press Release : Hon. Shurwayne Holder, Member of Parliament, has raised serious concerns over what he describes as the Government of Guyana’s questionable financial practices just weeks before the upcoming General Elections. He accused the government of engaging in secret spending through the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), which he claims is aimed at bribery and vote buying in select Indigenous communities.

According to Holder, approximately two hundred million dollars ($200,000,000) has been spent in the past six weeks on purchasing and distributing buses, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), and boats with engines. Alarmingly, he noted that the documentation fails to specify which communities benefited, instead categorizing the funds broadly as support for mining communities.
Further compounding these concerns, Holder revealed that the government, via the Ministry of Natural Resources and GGMC, recently withdrew twenty million dollars ($20,000,000) from public funds. This amount was reportedly distributed directly to twenty village captains, with each receiving one million dollars, again without prior parliamentary approval or oversight.
“This act is very concerning,” Holder stated, highlighting that Parliament was not briefed on these activities before its dissolution. He criticized the government’s typically public approach to less significant projects, questioning why such substantial expenditures are being handled in secrecy.
Holder described the government’s actions as corrupt and unethical, calling them a direct attack on democracy and the rights of Indigenous communities. “It is shameful that taxpayers’ hard-earned money is being funneled through the Ministry of Natural Resources and GGMC with no accountability,” he added, emphasizing the need for transparency and ethical governance.
He urged citizens to recognize the implications of these practices, calling for accountability and a prioritization of the well-being of all communities over deceptive tactics. “It’s time for a change and for real transparency and honesty in our government dealings. Their actions must be condemned by all,” Holder concluded.
