BIG SMITH NEWS WATCH Reports : In a shocking incident on East Street, Georgetown, two young women were left screaming in agony after a brutal acid attack in broad daylight. The victims, identified as Jillicia Leitch, 25, from Tuschen Housing Scheme, and Nirmala Sukraj, 20, from Good Hope Phase 1, are both cashiers at Balwant Singh Hospital.

The attack occurred around 2:00 PM as the women left the hospital to buy lunch at a nearby supermarket. According to Leitch, a man dressed in brown clothing approached them and suddenly hurled a corrosive liquid. “I don’t know if he came from behind, but he threw something on the girl beside me, and when she moved, some splashed onto me—on my right arm, face, and neck,” she recounted, visibly shaken and in pain.
As the acid began to eat into their skin, the women panicked and ran in opposite directions, crying for help. Leitch sought refuge in a nearby bar but was turned away. “They pushed me out of the store and locked up,” she said tearfully. Eventually, she collapsed outside a Chinese supermarket, where bystanders helped by pouring water over her burns.
Sukraj managed to stagger back to Balwant Singh Hospital, where she received emergency treatment. Leitch was later rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where doctors indicated she may have suffered burns from battery acid. She is currently hospitalized in serious condition.
Following the attack, police at the Alberttown Police Station informed the victims that CCTV footage had led them to a vehicle suspected to be connected to the crime. The car, reportedly owned by an East Coast mechanic, has been identified, but the alleged driver remains at large. Initially, officers claimed to have arrested a suspect, but later clarified that no arrests had been made.
The vicious assault has left both women traumatized, raising concerns about safety in the area. The investigation is ongoing as the community rallies around the victims in their time of need.
