The horse racing community in Guyana is mourning the loss of 18-year-old jockey Kishawn Pereira, who tragically died following a fall during the penultimate race at the 17th Guyana Cup held at the Rising Sun Turf Club.

The Jumbo Jet Thoroughbred Racing Committee confirmed the incident in an official statement, extending condolences to Pereira’s family. They noted that this marks the first fatal incident in 17 years of hosting the Guyana Cup.
“Immediately after the fall, our on-site paramedics responded and rushed him to the hospital, but despite their efforts, he did not survive,” the statement read. The committee acknowledged that earlier light showers may have created unpredictable track conditions.
They emphasized their commitment to safety in the sport and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a talented young rider with a bright future. The committee urged respect for the family’s privacy during this difficult time.
