A house in Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice, was completely destroyed by fire on Sunday afternoon, with authorities suspecting arson as the cause.

Rasheed Sinclair, a farmer and son of the homeowner, Florette Sinclair, reported that he was nearby when the fire broke out around 13:00h. Upon his arrival, he found the entire structure engulfed in flames.
Firefighters from the New Amsterdam Fire Station were quickly dispatched to the scene.
Sinclair noted that the house contained minimal possessions, making it challenging to assess the extent of the damage. The property had been rented but was vacated just two weeks prior, meaning there were no cooking or other activities that could have sparked the fire. He also mentioned that there was no electricity connected to the premises at the time.
“I was preparing to go and farm the yard because I bought red beans to plant,” Sinclair recounted, emphasizing his disbelief regarding the fire’s origins.
He expressed strong suspicion that the fire was deliberately set, stating, “No fire can just light on its own.”
Clive McDonald, the Berbice Divisional Fire Officer, confirmed that preliminary reports indicate the fire was maliciously set. Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
