Nigel Hughes, Leader of the Alliance For Change, criticized the PPP government for not adequately addressing poverty despite Guyana earning $1.5 billion daily from oil production. Speaking at a public meeting in Linden, Hughes highlighted that 48% of the population lives in poverty, with 20% of children facing extreme food poverty.

He questioned the government’s promises to invest in various sectors without a clear plan to combat poverty, stating, “If we can’t eliminate extreme food poverty after three years of oil production, how can the government expect your vote?”
Hughes linked high poverty levels to poor CSEC results, suggesting that many students won’t secure decent jobs and will hinder the country’s development. He urged Linden residents to remember their political persecution and the importance of their vote.
