Human Capital Strategy Being Finalized to Address Labour Shortages

  • News

President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced that Guyana is in the final stages of developing a comprehensive human capital strategy to address the country’s labour shortages, particularly in healthcare. Speaking on the podcast The Rest Is Politics, he emphasized the strategy’s connection to migration and the specific skills needed for the future.

The President highlighted the global healthcare crisis, noting that many nurses are relocating to countries like the UK, which has affected Guyana as well. While the government is building capacity to train healthcare professionals, significant shortages remain, prompting ongoing recruitment efforts.

Additionally, the strategy aims to reshape the education system to better align with current and future workforce needs. President Ali expressed confidence that healthcare professionals who left for better pay overseas will return as local opportunities improve.
