  • News

World-renowned actor and humanitarian Idris Elba has expressed his admiration for Guyana’s commitment to environmental stewardship, stating his desire to visit the country soon to witness its efforts in balancing environmental protection with economic development. Elba conveyed this message through the Akuna Group, his organization, during the inaugural Global Biodiversity Alliance Summit held in Georgetown, which was read by Guyanese climate economist Pradeepa Bholanath.

“I have long wished to visit Guyana,” Elba shared, recalling fond memories of growing up with friends from Guyanese families and hearing stories about the nation’s “magnificent forests” and “powerful rivers.”

Elba thanked President Dr. Irfaan Ali for his visionary leadership on the global stage, noting that the message of biodiversity protection resonates beyond Guyana’s borders. He emphasized that “biodiversity must not be sacrificed in the name of development,” highlighting it as the foundation for building a more equitable and sustainable future.

“Guyana is providing that environmental stewardship and economic progress, and they are not mutually exclusive,” Elba stated, praising the country’s ability to protect the planet while uplifting communities.

As a philanthropist committed to similar ideals, Elba expressed that he is “deeply inspired” by Guyana’s example and looks forward to visiting in the near future. The Akuna Group, founded by Elba, focuses on nurturing African industries and entrepreneurship through strategic partnerships, impact investments, and innovative technologies.
