International Allies Call for Peaceful Elections as Guyana Prepares to Vote

As Guyanese prepare to head to the polls on Monday, September 1, to cast their ballots, key allies from the international community are urging for a peaceful election day that allows citizens to vote freely.

The United States has expressed strong support for Guyana’s General and Regional Elections, with US Ambassador Nicole Theriot confirming her team’s accreditation by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) to observe the electoral process. “We expect election day to be calm and peaceful, with registered voters casting their votes freely. The United States reaffirms our respect for Guyana’s sovereignty and values Guyana as a strong, stable democratic partner,” the US embassy stated.

British High Commissioner to Guyana Jane Miller also announced her participation, emphasizing the significance of the day. “September 1st is an exciting day for Guyana, as the people of this country have the opportunity to vote. We are looking forward to a peaceful day, one where people freely cast their vote,” Miller remarked.

Similarly, Sébastien Sigouin, High Commissioner of Canada to Guyana, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming elections. “With the team at the Canadian High Commission, we are preparing to observe this process. The people of Guyana will express their will by voting freely, and when the outcome is known, the people will have spoken. May it be a peaceful and joyful day for democracy,” he stated.

Ambassador Rene van Nes, Head of the Delegation of the European Union in Guyana, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of the electoral process. “September 1st is an exciting day for Guyana, as the people of this beautiful country exercise their right to vote. The EU is looking forward to this celebration of democracy—a day when Guyanese freely and peacefully cast their vote,” he said.

These ABCE countries—United States, Britain, Canada, and the European Union—played a crucial role during Guyana’s last General and Regional Elections in 2020, helping to ensure that democracy was upheld amidst challenges. As the nation anticipates the elections, the calls for a peaceful and fair voting process serve as a reminder of the importance of democratic participation.
