Authorities are continuing their investigation into the fatal multi-vehicle accident that occurred Wednesday morning on the access road leading to the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge. The incident claimed the life of 65-year-old Cuban national Gerardo Machado Valdivia.

The tragedy unfolded at approximately 6:42 a.m. when Mr. Valdivia attempted to cross the thoroughfare from south to north.
Initial Collision: A 22-year-old driver (PAG 6631) traveling west attempted to avoid the pedestrian by braking and swerving, but the vehicle ultimately struck him.
Secondary Impacts: Following the initial impact, the driver of the first vehicle lost control, hitting the concrete median. The car then spun into the path of oncoming traffic, colliding with two other vehicles—motor car PAM 2461 and motor hire car HC 723—which were heading east.
Outcome: Mr. Valdivia was pronounced dead at the scene by attending medical personnel. His remains have been moved to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home to await a post-mortem examination.
The three drivers involved—a 22-year-old from Hague, a 28-year-old from Recht-Door-Zee, and a 54-year-old from Onderneeming—are currently in police custody. Authorities confirmed that breathalyzer tests performed on all three drivers returned negative results for alcohol consumption.
