Nineteen-year-old jockey Kishawn Pereira tragically lost his life on Sunday evening at the Guyana Cup Horse Race meet in Berbice after falling from his horse and being trampled. The riderless horse crossed the finish line as medical teams rushed to assist him; Pereira was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Reports suggest he suffered multiple injuries from the fall and the subsequent trampling. The incident occurred in poor lighting conditions, with complaints from racegoers about the track’s state, which was muddy from heavy rains.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident has been launched.
