Police in Regional Division #7 have initiated an investigation into the death of 55-year-old Brazilian national and miner, Jose Cloves Deas Francisco, following the discovery of his body on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at Waiamo Backdam along the Cuyuni River.
Preliminary inquiries suggest that Francisco had been drinking earlier in the day. He was last seen alive around 7:00 AM at his apartment. By approximately 10:00 AM, he was found motionless on the steps of his apartment, prompting a report to the authorities.
Upon examination at the scene, police noted that there were no visible marks of violence on his body. He was subsequently transported to the Bartica Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor.
The body has been placed in the hospital’s mortuary pending a post-mortem examination, which will be crucial in determining the cause of death.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Francisco’s death is ongoing, with police working to gather more information.
