Investigation Underway After Police Vessel Sinks in Rupununi River

News

The police are currently investigating an incident that occurred on Saturday around 8:10 AM, involving ranks from the Guyana Police Force, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), and an officer from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) during a joint operation.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the ranks were boarding an 18-foot aluminum boat at the Normandy Crossing landing for a joint operation along the Rupununi River. Shortly after departing, the vessel sank, prompting all occupants to swim to safety on the riverbank.

Five joint services ranks, including the coxswain and a GGMC officer, were aboard the boat, but fortunately, no injuries were reported.

During the incident, however, it was noted that three service rifles and a quantity of ammunition went missing in the river. GDF ranks are actively conducting recovery efforts in the area as investigations continue.
