Jagdeo Denies Claims of Sanctions Against PPP Ministers

  • News

News Room Guyana Reports : Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, who also serves as the General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), addressed rumors on Thursday regarding potential sanctions against government ministers. Responding to a Facebook post suggesting that PPP ministers would face sanctions from the United States, Jagdeo firmly stated, “It’s a lie. No PPP minister is on any sanction list or to be sanctioned.”

Jagdeo did, however, highlight the sanctions imposed last year by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) against the Mohamed family. On June 11, 2024, sanctions targeted Nazar Mohamed, his son Azruddin Mohamed, and their associated businesses—Mohamed’s Enterprise, Hadi’s World, and Team Mohamed’s Racing—due to allegations of gold smuggling and corruption.

As a consequence of these sanctions, the Mohamed family had their business licenses revoked, and bank accounts closed. Jagdeo also mentioned that Mae Thomas, the former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, was sanctioned, along with her family members.

Jagdeo pointed out that despite claims from Mr. Mohamed downplaying the seriousness of the sanctions, there are significant repercussions. Four local banks—Demerara Bank, GBTI, Citizens Bank, and the New Building Society—closed accounts belonging to candidates of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, led by Azruddin Mohamed.

In addition, this year saw Senior Superintendent Himnauth Sawh and three other Guyanese facing OFAC sanctions, including Paul Daby Jr. and Mark Cromwell, who is linked to criminal elements in the country.

While Jagdeo affirmed that no PPP ministers are facing sanctions, he suggested that claims to the contrary might be mischievous in nature.
