Jagdeo Dismisses Opposition Parties Ahead of Upcoming Elections

General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo has dismissed the emerging opposition parties as ineffective contenders for the upcoming elections. Speaking at his weekly press conference, Jagdeo asserted that the combined efforts of the opposition cannot compete with the competence and experience of the PPP, President Irfaan Ali, and Prime Minister Mark Phillips.

Jagdeo urged voters to carefully evaluate the political candidates in the race, particularly criticizing the APNU’s ticket of Aubrey Norton and Juretha Fernandes for lacking real governance experience. He expressed confidence in the PPP’s track record of delivery and asserted that the party is not concerned about competition from other political groups.

“The Guyanese people have seen our party’s history of delivering, and I am confident we will secure another mandate to govern,” Jagdeo stated. He encouraged voters to consider the implications of entrusting the future of Guyana to the opposition versus the leadership of Irfaan Ali and Mark Phillips.

He also noted that none of the opposing parties have presented a clear plan for the country, suggesting they are still struggling to define their positions. In contrast, Jagdeo announced that the PPP will soon unveil its vision in a manifesto and will campaign based on its accomplishments in office.

Additionally, Jagdeo mentioned that public consultations would be held to gather further input from Guyanese citizens. He characterized the opposition’s attempts to formulate a manifesto as “dishonest” and lacking in substance.

Jagdeo also rejected calls for President Ali to participate in a presidential debate with other candidates, arguing that such a debate would be unproductive. “The PPP is more interested in delivering results rather than engaging in point scoring,” he added.

As the election approaches, the PPP is positioning itself as the party of experience and proven governance, while the opposition faces challenges in presenting a unified and credible alternative.
