General Secretary of the governing People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, emphasized the importance of vigilance by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) against fraudulent activities as the country approaches the General and Regional Elections on September 1, 2025.

During a press conference on Thursday, Jagdeo raised concerns about individuals and political parties potentially undermining the electoral process. He urged GECOM to take decisive action against any party that threatens citizens to prevent them from supporting other political groups or fraudulently lists individuals as backers.
“GECOM should take firm action against any party threatening people not to go on any party’s list. They should also take action against parties fraudulently putting backers on their list,” Jagdeo stated.
He elaborated on the issue, suggesting that representatives from some parties may mislead citizens by claiming they are signing up for sports teams or cash grants, when in reality, they are being used as party nominators.
To participate in the upcoming elections, parties must submit their symbols for approval along with several lists of candidates: one National Top-Up List, at least six Geographical Constituencies’ Lists, and Regional Democratic Councils’ Lists. The National Top-Up List, which identifies the presidential candidate, must contain at least 42 candidates and between 300 and 330 nominators nationwide. Each Geographical Constituency List requires between 150 and 175 nominators from the respective constituency.
Jagdeo asserted that such unscrupulous actions should not be tolerated, and he pledged that the PPP will “pay keen attention” to developments in the coming weeks as the election season unfolds.
