News Room Reports : In a significant political shift ahead of the upcoming general elections, Juretha Fernandes has been chosen as the Prime Ministerial candidate for A Partnership for National Unity (APNU). This decision comes as the opposition continues to navigate a complex landscape.

Fernandes, currently a Member of Parliament representing the Alliance for Change (AFC), is set to run alongside APNU’s presidential candidate, Aubrey Norton. Her selection follows the AFC’s unsuccessful attempts to re-enter a coalition agreement with APNU, positioning Fernandes as a defector to the People’s National Congress (PNC), the leading party within the APNU alliance.
This announcement marks a departure from earlier speculation that Ganesh Mahipaul, an opposition MP, would be nominated for the Prime Ministerial role. Mahipaul had been considered a frontrunner following the resignation of PNC’s Amanza Walton-Desir, who was rumored to be interested in the nomination herself.
While APNU has yet to officially confirm its complete leadership slate for the elections, Fernandes’ emergence as the PM candidate signals a new political narrative within the opposition.
