Khadidja Ba of Stabroek News has won the first Women and Gender Equality Commission Media Prize, with fellow journalist Miranda La Rose in second place and Danielle Swain of News Room Inc. in third.

Ba was recognized for her feature on parents affected by the Mahdia dormitory fire in May 2023, which claimed 20 lives. La Rose’s entry profiled the impact of education on poverty, while Swain highlighted women in Huradiah, Moruca, contributing to sustainable development.
The awards ceremony took place at the University of Guyana’s Turkeyen Campus, celebrating journalism that promotes gender equality. Renata Chuck-A-Sang from the Commission emphasized the need for broader narratives around gender beyond suffering and violence.
Ba reflected on the emotional toll of reporting on the Mahdia tragedy, urging journalists to acknowledge the trauma in their stories. Nine journalists were recognized in total, and the Commission hopes to make the Media Prize an annual event to enhance journalism’s role in fostering equality in the Caribbean.
