Labourer Charged in Fatal Accident Involving Minibus

News

Shawn Sargeant, a 28-year-old labourer, has been charged with causing the death of Jason Bhojedat, 33, following a tragic accident that occurred on Sunday night. Sargeant appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court, where he was not required to plead to the charge and was granted bail in the amount of $700,000.

According to a police report, Sargeant was driving motorcar PKK 6633 on the Diamond New Interlink Road when he attempted to overtake Bhojedat, who was driving a minibus. In the process, he crashed into the minibus, causing it to collide with an electricity pole and overturn several times. Bhojedat was thrown from the vehicle and tragically lost his life at the scene.

Due to minor injuries sustained in the accident, including stitches to his mouth, police were unable to conduct a breathalyzer test on Sargeant to determine whether he was under the influence at the time of the crash.

Bhojedat, who joined Demerara Distillers Limited on January 10, 2014, began his career as a Trainee Chemist. His dedication and commitment led him to advance through various roles, including Production/Quality Control Chemist, Warehouse Manager, and ultimately, Distillery Plant Manager, a position he held with distinction until his untimely passing.

As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of Bhojedat, remembering him for his contributions and commitment to his work. Further court dates will determine the legal proceedings against Sargeant as both families navigate this tragic incident.
