Inews Reports : A tragic accident occurred on Saturday when 36-year-old Mervin Lochan, a labourer working on a road project at Bhagwandas Street, was killed after being run over by an excavator. Lochan, a father of four from Sparta on the Essequibo Coast, had recently been promoted to the position of chairman at the worksite.

Preliminary reports indicate that the excavator was reversing when it allegedly struck Lochan, causing him to fall onto the roadway before being run over. His body was later discovered buried under sand at the site.
In an interview with Inews, Lochan’s mother, Yolanda, expressed her belief that her son’s death was not accidental. She recalled a previous incident where he had been hit by an excavator while working on the same site, suggesting that jealousy over his recent promotion may have contributed to the tragedy.
“I was at home when I received a phone call. This morning, he left for work around quarter to eight, telling me he was going with a good spirit,” she recounted, struggling to comprehend how such an incident could occur. “How come an excavator operator can’t see a worker if he was around or whatever?” she questioned.
Yolanda described her son as a devoted family man, lamenting the impact of his loss on his family. “My son is 36 years old, and he has his family, he has his wife, he has four kids. And now he’s got only four kids to suffer without a father. This is just not fair; this is unfair,” she said through tears.
The excavator operator has since been taken into police custody, and construction at the site has been temporarily halted as investigations continue.
