In a groundbreaking achievement for advanced eye care in Guyana, Optique Eye Hospital, in collaboration with Trinidad Eye Hospital, successfully conducted a complex retinal detachment surgery this week at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.

The patient, a 13-year-old child with a severe retinal detachment in their only seeing eye, faced the threat of imminent and irreversible blindness. The highly technical procedure, one of the most challenging in vitreoretinal ophthalmology, was performed as a last resort to preserve the child’s remaining vision and optimize the potential for visual recovery. The surgery was completed successfully, and the clinical team remains cautiously optimistic as post-operative healing continues.
Typically, such intricate retinal detachment surgeries require patients to be referred overseas, with costs often exceeding US$50,000, not including travel and accommodation, which poses a significant financial burden on families and healthcare systems.
This successful regional collaboration allowed the surgery to take place locally in Guyana, ensuring timely intervention without necessitating international travel.
Importantly, all professional fees and associated costs were generously discounted, with the entire expense of the procedure jointly covered by Optique Eye Hospital, Trinidad Eye Hospital, and Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), relieving the child and their family of any financial strain.
The case represents a broader strategic initiative aimed at establishing sustainable, high-level subspecialty ophthalmic services within Guyana and the Caribbean. Dr. Bhola and his team are in Guyana this week to kick-start this effort to merge regional expertise with local infrastructure. Advanced eye care is now more accessible, with the soon-to-be-launched Optique Eye Hospital located at 350 New Market Street, Georgetown.
Dr. Ronnie Bhola, a Consultant Vitreous and Retina Surgeon, expressed his pride in the collaboration, saying, “We are very pleased that, through our partnership with Mr. Dhani Narine, CEO of Optique Eye Hospital, and Dr. Shailendra Sugrim, we made this possible here in Guyana. Cases like this show that world-class eye surgery can be delivered within our region, reducing the necessity for families to travel abroad and offering hope to patients facing possible blindness.”
Mr. Dhani Narine, CEO of Optique Eye Hospital, affirmed the institution’s commitment to elevating eye care standards, stating, “Our mission is not only to deliver eye care but to raise the bar for what is possible within Guyana and the Caribbean. With the right partnerships, a supportive investment climate from the Government of Guyana, and unwavering commitment, complex procedures can now be performed locally at an international standard.”
This successful case highlights the vital importance of regional collaboration, sustained investment in specialized healthcare infrastructure, and a shared mission to preserve sight for children and adults alike throughout Guyana and the Caribbean.
