HGP Nightly News Reports : A fresh political controversy has erupted after Opposition Member of Parliament Odessa Primus was served a legal demand alleging defamatory statements posted on social media.

Attorney-at-law Dexter Smartt, acting on behalf of former Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton, has issued a formal letter accusing Primus of publishing “false and malicious” claims on her personal Facebook page on January 30, 2026. According to the correspondence, the post purportedly suggested that Norton received or accepted monies from Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo — an allegation Norton’s legal team strongly denies.
The letter states that Norton, a long-standing political figure and leader within the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), has suffered serious harm to his reputation locally, regionally and internationally as a result of the post. His attorneys contend that the allegations have not only damaged his public standing but may also adversely affect his future professional opportunities, particularly in academia.
Primus, who serves as an MP and is a well-known public figure, is accused in the demand of publishing the statements without evidence. In an effort to avoid court proceedings, Norton’s lawyers are seeking the immediate removal of the post, a public apology published in the same manner as the original post, and compensation of $500,000. The letter gives Primus 24 hours to comply and warns that failure to do so will prompt legal action without further notice.
Primus could not be immediately reached for comment. The dispute adds to mounting tensions in the political landscape as parties and prominent figures trade accusations in both traditional and digital forums. Authorities and political observers will be watching closely to see whether the matter is resolved privately or proceeds to the courts.
