The Linden Town Council has issued a strong rebuttal to statements made by Prime Minister Hon. Mark Phillips concerning the maintenance and administration of the Wismar Mackenzie Bridge, attributing his remarks to either “inexcusable ignorance or willful deceit.”

In a press release, the Council clarified that it is not responsible for the bridge’s upkeep, highlighting that the toll increase approved by the PPP/C government on October 9, 2014, established a revenue-sharing arrangement involving both the Linden Mayor and Town Council and the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL). This agreement, which has been in effect since 2014, was officially gazetted and outlines how revenue collected from the tolls is distributed.
The Council refuted claims that it has neglected the bridge, stating that maintenance has historically been managed by LINMINE, now under NICIL’s operation and oversight by the government. The Council emphasized that it has never held operational or maintenance responsibilities for the bridge.
Moreover, the Council expressed concern that the government has not been remitting its agreed portion of the profit share, which has hindered the Council’s ability to effectively perform civic duties.
“We urge the Prime Minister to verify facts before making public statements that may impact the reputation and operational capacity of the Linden Town Council,” said Mayor Sharma Solomon.
The Council also extended its sympathy to those injured due to recent damage to the bridge, wishing them a swift recovery.
The Linden Town Council remains committed to collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents.
