President Dr. Irfaan Ali has announced that a list of persons identified in connection with irregularities in Guyana’s driver’s licensing system will be published shortly, with those named expected to come forward and explain themselves.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event at the Guyana Defence Force on Wednesday, the President said reconciliation efforts are actively ongoing and that the list is currently being prepared.

“The reconciliation is ongoing, and what you will see very soon is a list published of persons who will be asked to come in to explain the issues. I know that list is being prepared,” Dr. Ali said.

The announcement builds on earlier warnings from the President that individuals who did not follow the proper process to obtain their licences would be given six weeks to surrender themselves or face prosecution, licence suspension, and public exposure.

A technology-driven audit of the licensing system had previously uncovered serious discrepancies, including cases where more persons received practical certificates than had actually passed the theory examination — meaning individuals obtained practical certifications without ever passing the required theory test.

On Wednesday, President Ali also acknowledged that enforcement of road traffic laws remains a persistent challenge, despite stiffer fines already having been introduced.

“We had increased the fines… but enforcement is a problem,” he admitted, adding that the situation is being addressed through the expanded use of cameras across the road network.

The President further revealed that he has tasked the Attorney General with reviewing the existing laws and recommending any amendments necessary to strengthen the system.

“I have asked the Attorney General to once again look at what additional measures will be needed and to ensure whenever amendments are needed those amendments will be in place,” Dr. Ali said.
