Local Contractor Tragically Drowns Near Ruby Backdam

In a heartbreaking incident on Saturday evening, Raj Birsa, a 44-year-old contractor from Ruby Backdam, drowned near a local drainage canal around 7:00 PM.

According to police reports, Birsa had been drinking at a nearby shop when he stepped outside to urinate near the canal. It is believed that he lost his balance and fell into the water. At the time of the incident, the sluice was open, causing a strong current that likely swept him away from where he fell.

Residents quickly alerted the police, who arrived on the scene and organized a search party. After approximately two hours of searching, Birsa’s lifeless body was located about 60 feet from the initial point of entry into the canal.

Authorities transported his body to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where a doctor confirmed his death. A police examination revealed no signs of violence.

Birsa’s body has since been taken to the Ezekiel Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination (PME). The community mourns the loss of a local contractor, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
