Magistrate Allows Bail for Opposition Leader, Warns of Future Consequences

News

Magistrate Judy Latchman addressed the court on Monday regarding Azruddin Mohamed, the Leader of the Opposition, who was taken into custody and brought to court in handcuffs after failing to appear for an extradition matter. Latchman granted Mohamed bail but warned him that any further lateness would result in immediate withdrawal of his bail.

The matter was revisited after a bail application was submitted earlier in the day to acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty. She directed that Magistrate Latchman be contacted, as she had previously issued the arrest warrant for Mohamed.

When questioned about his tardiness, Mohamed expressed regret, stating he had legitimate reasons for being late. He explained that his driver discovered two damaged tires on the vehicle early that morning, and none of his other cars were insured, leaving him without alternative transportation.

Magistrate Latchman reminded him of prior instances of lateness and emphasized the importance of punctuality in the courtroom. “Under this court’s watch, the wheels of justice will continue to turn in a timely manner,” she asserted, reflecting her frustration with the repeated delays.

Prosecutor Terrence Williams raised concerns, noting that Mohamed’s earlier excuses for his absence had involved health issues. He questioned the consistency of Mohamed’s reasoning and suggested that there was a pattern of attempting to delay proceedings.

Despite her displeasure, Magistrate Latchman opted not to remand Mohamed this time, stating she would “temper justice with mercy.” However, she made it clear that any future delays would result in stricter consequences for him.
