Man Released on Bail Following Remand for Cannabis Possession

Gavin Dowden, who was previously remanded for possession of cannabis, was released on $200,000 bail on Friday for the same charge.

Dowden appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty during his initial court appearance at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on May 17. He faced allegations of possessing 1.042 kilograms of cannabis and pleaded not guilty, leading to his remand.

In Friday’s hearing, Dowden appeared before Magistrate Annette Singh, who granted him bail with specific conditions: he must lodge his passport and report to the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) every Friday.

Dowden’s attorney requested bail, arguing that his client is a businessman who operates a welding shop in Sophia. The lawyer explained that on the day of the incident, Dowden was at a gas station when an unnamed individual asked him to drop off a package, promising payment. When the individual returned, they were accompanied by CANU officers, leading to Dowden’s arrest. The attorney contended that Dowden was framed and assured the court that he is not a flight risk.

The prosecution opposed the bail request, stating there were no special circumstances to warrant it. They noted that the narcotics were found next to Dowden in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. The prosecutor requested that if bail were granted, Dowden should report to CANU.

Bail was ultimately granted, and the case has been adjourned to July 11, 2025, for further proceedings.
