A 25-year-old man, Karran Sukhan, has been remanded to prison following serious charges of domestic violence, wounding, and other offences. Sukhan, a resident of number 2 Village, East Canje Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Michelle Mathias at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.

During the proceedings, Sukhan pled guilty to charges of Assault Causing Bodily Harm, Threatening Language, and Threatening Behavior against 20-year-old Joanna, which occurred on June 6th. These charges fall under Section 141 (a) and Section 30 (a) of the Summary Jurisdiction (Offenses) Act, Chapter 8:02.
Magistrate Mathias took a firm stance against Sukhan’s actions, remanding him to prison until his next court appearance scheduled for June 23rd.
In a poignant move on June 13th, Joanna shared her experience of abuse during their six-year relationship via a Facebook post, seeking urgent assistance. In her emotional account, she detailed the trajectory of their relationship, beginning with romance in 2018, which soon devolved into repeated brutality by 2019.
Despite filing five separate reports with the police, Joanna expressed frustration at being met with indifference and ridicule. She recounted an incident where an officer at the New Amsterdam Police Station allegedly blamed her for staying in the abusive relationship.
In response to Joanna’s allegations, Region Six Police Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus has promised that disciplinary actions will be taken against the officer involved. He assured the public that every effort is being made to apprehend Sukhan and address the issues raised by Joanna.
Following her post, authorities acted swiftly, leading to Sukhan’s arrest and the initiation of the legal process against him. The case has highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by victims of domestic violence and the importance of responsive law enforcement.
