Man Sentenced for Introducing Narcotics into Prison

Timothy McGarrell, a 24-year-old laborer from the Timehri Squatting Area in East Bank Demerara, has been sentenced for the crime of introducing narcotics into a correctional facility. This offence, which violates Section 7(1)(a)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, occurred on February 17, 2026, at the Lusignan Prison.

McGarrell appeared in the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate Sunil Scarce on February 18, 2026. After the charge was read, he pleaded guilty to the offence. The court subsequently sentenced him to three years in prison and imposed a fine of $30,000 GYD.
